B1Sentence building 5 min

Reported speech passes on words with що, чи, a question word or щоб, and the verb keeps the tense of the original words. The verb keeps the tense the speaker used: Оле́г сказа́в: «Я вто́млений». ≠ Оле́г сказа́в, що він уто́млений.

OverviewB1

  • Direct speech gives the exact words in quotation marks; reported speech passes them on in a clause. Виклада́ч сказа́в: «Ви пови́нні ува́жно прочита́ти текст». ≠ Виклада́ч сказа́в, що ми пови́нні ува́жно прочита́ти текст. — The teacher said, “You must read the text carefully.” ≠ The teacher said that we had to read the text carefully.
  • When the reporting words come first, a colon follows them. When they come after: a statement takes a comma and a dash after the quotation marks, a question or an exclamation only a dash. «Я вдо́ма», — сказа́ла ма́ма. ≠ «Ти вдо́ма?» — запита́ла ма́ма. — “I'm home,” Mum said. ≠ “Are you home?” Mum asked.
