The preposition у or в, the conjunction і or й and the preposition з, із or зі change with the sounds around them, so vowels and consonants alternate. Between consonants, write у; between vowels, в: Брат у шко́лі. Вона́ була́ в Оде́сі.

З, із, зіA1

зі before a consonant cluster, most often one starting with з, с, ш, щ	Ді́ти йдуть зі шко́ли. / Вона́ ви́йшла зі сту́дії. / Ході́мо зі мно́ю. / По́тяг зі Льво́ва.	The children are coming from school. / She came out of the studio. / Come with me. / The train from Lviv.
із between consonants	Він із Сінгапу́ру. / Лист із Брази́лії.	He's from Singapore. / A letter from Brazil.

These rules keep the language smooth to the ear; careful speech and writing follow them.
Between consonants, із goes before a single consonant and зі before a cluster.
