The present subjunctive swaps the vowel of the ending: -ar verbs take e, hable, and -er and -ir verbs take a, coma. The stem comes from the yo form of the present, so an irregular yo carries over: Quiero que vengas. Espero que tengas suerte.

- The subjunctive is a mood: it names wishes, doubts and events not yet real, mostly in a clause after que.
- Its endings swap the vowel: verbs in -ar take e, and verbs in -er and -ir take a.

- Verbs in -ar and -er change as in the present, and nosotros keeps the vowel.
