Dolaylı anlatım, birinin söylediğini alıntılamadan say, tell ve ask fiilleriyle aktarır. Geçmiş zamanlı bir fiilden sonra zaman bir adım geriye kayar ve sorular düz cümle sırasını alır: She asked where I lived.

tell fiilinden sonra her zaman kişi gelir. say kişisiz kullanılır ya da to + kişi alır.

Geçmiş zamanlı aktarma fiilinden (said, told, asked) sonra zaman genellikle bir adım geriye kayar.

Gerçek hâlâ doğruysa zaman değişmeyebilir: She said she lives in Paris. — Paris’te yaşadığını söyledi.
says (şimdiki zaman) sonrasında zaman değişmez: She says she is tired. — Yorgun olduğunu söylüyor.

Zamirler konuşana göre değişir: “I'm tired,” said Anna → Anna said she was tired. — “Yorgunum,” dedi Anna. Anna yorgun olduğunu söyledi.
Aktarma aynı gün yapılıyorsa zaman sözcükleri değişmez.
