> Desideri e paragoni irreali con wish, if only, as if, it's time e would rather, che richiedono un tempo passato. Un desiderio sul presente richiede il past simple, uno sul passato il past perfect: I wish I had more time. I wish I had studied harder.

## Panoramica

- wish, if only, as if, it's time, would rather e suppose condividono lo stesso insieme di tempi irreali.
- Un tempo passato dopo queste parole rende la situazione irreale; il momento resta presente o futuro. I wish I lived nearer the sea. — Vorrei abitare più vicino al mare.
- Il periodo ipotetico con if usa gli stessi tempi: vedi Periodo ipotetico.

- were vale per tutte le persone nello stile formale, e was è comune nel parlato. I wish she were / was here. — Vorrei che fosse qui.
- La forma negativa usa didn't, hadn't, couldn't o wouldn't. I wish I hadn't said that. — Vorrei non averlo detto.

- If only è più forte di I wish e può stare da solo come risposta. Did you get the job? — If only! — Hai ottenuto il lavoro? — Magari!

## It's time

- as though significa come as if ed è un po' più formale.

## I desideri nel discorso indiretto

- Dopo un verbo introduttivo al passato, wish diventa wished e il tempo irreale che segue resta uguale.
