> Il do enfatico, le scisse con it e le pseudoscisse con wh- mettono a fuoco una parte della frase. Una scissa mette il focus dopo be e il resto della frase in una proposizione: It was Tom who broke the window. What I need is a holiday.

## Scheda riassuntiva

| Punto | Regola | Esempio | Italiano |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| do enfatico | do / does / did + forma base prende l'accento | She did tell me. | Me l'ha detto davvero. |
| Scissa con it | It + be + focus + who / that + proposizione | It was Tom who broke it. | È stato Tom a romperlo. |
| Pseudoscissa con wh- | What + proposizione + be + focus; oppure invertita: focus + be + what + proposizione | What I need is a holiday. |
| Formule con un sostantivo | all, the thing, the reason e the place aprono la proposizione | All I want is peace and quiet. | Tutto ciò che voglio è pace e tranquillità. |
| Proposizione come focus | il focus può essere una proposizione: only when, not until, because | It was only when she left that I realised. |
| Scissa esplicativa | respinge un motivo e dà quello vero | It isn't that I don't like her; it's that I'm busy. |
| Risposte | una scissa risponde a una domanda con wh-; l'accento principale cade sul focus | Who broke it? — It was Tom. | Chi l'ha rotto? — È stato Tom. |
| Infinito come focus | dopo una forma di do, il focus è un infinito senza to o con to | All you have to do is (to) press the button. |
| Formule di presa di posizione | the fact is, the thing is e formule simili aprono un'affermazione | The trouble is that the shop closes at five. |
| Scrittura formale | le scisse formali rimandano a un motivo o a un contesto | It is for this reason that the committee refused.
As for Tom, he has gone home. | Quanto a Tom, è andato a casa. |
| Trappola | who o that sostituisce il focus: niente secondo soggetto né secondo complemento | It was Ana that I met. | È Ana che ho incontrato. |

## Panoramica

It was the bus that I missed.

## Forma: do enfatico

| Forma | Schema | Esempio |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Presente | do / does + forma base | I do like it. / She does know the answer. — Mi piace davvero. / La risposta la sa. |
| Passato | did + forma base | She did tell me. — Me l'ha detto davvero. |
| Imperativo | do + forma base | Do sit down. / Do be careful. — Siediti pure. / Stai molto attento. |

- Nelle affermazioni, be, l'ausiliare have e i modali prendono loro l'accento, non do. She is late. / I have finished. / He can swim. — È davvero in ritardo. / Ho davvero finito. / Sa davvero nuotare.
- Una negazione o una domanda ha già do; l'accento su do dà l'enfasi. I didn't take it. — Non l'ho proprio preso.

## Uso: do enfatico

| Uso | Esempio | Italiano |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Contraddice un dubbio o una negazione | You never help me. — I do help you! | Non mi aiuti mai. — Ti aiuto eccome! |
| Insiste che qualcosa è vero o è successo davvero | I did tell you about the party. | Ti ho parlato della festa, eccome. |
| Ammette un punto, poi aggiunge un ma | She did apologise, but it was too late. |
| Dà calore a un invito, a una speranza o a un complimento | Do have some cake. / We do hope you can come. / I do like your garden. | Prendi pure un po' di torta. / Speriamo proprio che tu possa venire. / Mi piace davvero il tuo giardino. |

## Forma: scissa con it

| Focus | Collegamento | Esempio | Italiano |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Una persona come soggetto | who o that | It was Ana who found the keys. | È stata Ana a trovare le chiavi. |
| Una cosa come soggetto | that | It was the wind that opened the door. |
| Un complemento | that o senza collegamento | It was the blue bag that I bought. | È la borsa blu che ho comprato. |
| Un'indicazione di tempo | that | It was yesterday that I saw her. | È stato ieri che l'ho vista. |
| Un sintagma preposizionale | that | It was in Paris that we met. | È a Parigi che ci siamo conosciuti. |

| Frase | Schema | Esempio |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Affermazione | It + be + focus + that + proposizione | It was Tom that broke it. — È stato Tom a romperlo. |
| Negazione | It + isn't / wasn't + focus + that + proposizione | It wasn't me that broke it. — Non sono stato io a romperlo. |
| Domanda | Is / Was + it + focus + that + proposizione | Was it Tom that broke it? — È stato Tom a romperlo? |

- Be indica il tempo: is per presente e verità generali, was per il passato, will be per il futuro. It is the manager who decides. / It will be Ana who tells him. — È il direttore che decide. / Sarà Ana a dirglielo.
It was Tom who broke it.
It was to Ana that I gave the key. = It was Ana that I gave the key to. — È ad Ana che ho dato la chiave.
- La proposizione dopo who o that funziona come una proposizione relativa: vedi Proposizioni relative.

## Forma: pseudoscissa con wh-

| Focus | Schema | Esempio | Italiano |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Un sostantivo | What + proposizione + be + sostantivo | What I need is a holiday. |
| Un'azione | What + soggetto + do / does / did + be + infinito | What he did was (to) leave early. |
| Una proposizione con that | What + verbo + be + that + proposizione | What happened was that the bus broke down. |
| Ordine invertito | sostantivo + be + what + proposizione | A holiday is what I need.

What I need is two weeks off.
- Senza do nella proposizione, l'infinito mantiene to. What I want is to sleep. — Quello che voglio è dormire.

## Formule: all, the thing, the reason

| Formula | Esempio | Italiano |
| --- | --- | --- |
| All + proposizione + be + focus | All I want is peace and quiet. | Tutto ciò che voglio è pace e tranquillità. |
| The thing + (that) + proposizione + be + focus | The thing that annoys me is the noise. |
| The reason + (why) + proposizione + be + focus | The reason I left was that the pay was low. |
| The place + (where) + proposizione + be + focus | The place where we met was a small café. |
| The first thing + proposizione + be + focus | The first thing I do is make coffee. |

## Uso: focus, correzione e riepilogo

| Uso | Esempio | Italiano |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Scissa con it: nomina la persona o la cosa responsabile | It was the neighbours who complained. | Sono stati i vicini a lamentarsi. |
| Scissa con it: corregge un dettaglio, spesso prima con una negazione | It wasn't the red one I wanted; it was the blue one. |
| Pseudoscissa con wh-: dice che cosa serve, si vuole o piace, poi lo nomina | What I like most is the quiet. |
| Pseudoscissa con wh-: porta al punto chiave di un racconto | What happened next was that the lights went out. |
| Pseudoscissa inversa: riassume o conferma | Yes, that's what I mean. | Sì, è proprio quello che intendo. |

## Confronto: scissa con it e pseudoscissa con wh-

| Punto | It-cleft | Wh-cleft |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Esempio | It was the red scarf that I lost. — È la sciarpa rossa che ho perso. | What I lost was the red scarf. |
| Una persona come focus | It was Tom who broke it. — È stato Tom a romperlo. | The person who broke it was Tom. |

| Focus | Esempio | Italiano |

| because e una proposizione | It was because he was ill that we cancelled. |
| Un'espressione di modo, con una proposizione passiva dopo that | It was by chance that the letter was found. |

- Dopo not until il verbo è affermativo; not rende già negativa la frase. It was not until May that the shop opened. — Solo a maggio il negozio ha aperto.
- Le proposizioni passive: vedi Forma passiva.

## Scisse esplicative

| Schema | Uso | Esempio | Italiano |

| Anche una domanda può essere una scissa | Who was it that called? / What was it that you said? | Chi è stato a chiamare? / Che cos'è che hai detto? |

It was Tom who broke it. ↘ — È stato Tom a romperlo.

| What + proposizione + be + to have + participio passato | What I'd hoped was to have finished by now. |

- Quando la proposizione o la formula contiene do, l'infinito del focus è senza to o con to. All I did was ask. / All I did was to ask. — Ho solo chiesto.
