# The ます-Form

> **ます**, **ません**, **ました** and **ませんでした** make the polite present, negative, past and past negative of a verb. Only the ending changes: 食たべ**ます**、食たべ**ません**、食たべ**ました**、食たべ**ませんでした**

## Overview

- The **ます**-form is the polite form of a verb: it ends the sentence and stays the same for every person. 私わたしは毎朝まいあさ、コーヒーを飲のみ**ます**。 (I drink coffee every morning.)
- One form serves habits, the present and the future. 毎日まいにち、日本語にほんごを勉強べんきょうし**ます**。 / 明日あした、学校がっこうに行いき**ます**。 (I study Japanese every day. / Tomorrow I will go to school.)
- How the **ます**-form is made from the dictionary form: see Verb Groups.

## Form: four endings

- The negative **ません** and the past **ました** replace **ます**; the past negative is **ませんでした**.
- **ませんか** makes an invitation; see Invitations: ましょう and ませんか.

## Form: questions and answers

| With a question word | 今日きょうは**何****なに****を**食たべますか。 — すしを食たべます。 | What are you going to eat today? — I will eat sushi. |

- **か** at the end makes the question; the word order stays. See Questions.
- A short answer repeats the verb alone: **はい** with the question's form, **いいえ** with the negative.

- A time word of the past goes with **ました**; habits, today and the future go with **ます**.
- A clock time takes **に**; **今日****きょう**, **明日****あした**, **昨日****きのう** and words with **毎** take no particle. See Particles を, に, で, へ. 7時しちじ**に**起おきます。 (I get up at seven.)

- A polite text keeps **です** and **ます** through every sentence. 私わたしは学生がくせい**です**。毎日まいにち、日本語にほんごを勉強べんきょうし**ます**。 (I am a student. I study Japanese every day.)
- Friends and family use the plain form instead; see The Plain Form.
