| Trap | A verb needs **こと**: **食****た****べることができます**, never **食****た****べるができます**. | 食たべる**ことが**できます。 | I can eat. |

## Overview

- **できます** means “can, be able to” and has two patterns: a noun with **が**, and a verb with **ことが**. 日本語にほんごが**できます**。 / 話はなす**ことができます**。 (I can speak Japanese. / I can speak.)
- **できます** is polite; it changes like any **ます** verb (The ます-Form).
- The thing you can do takes **が**, even when it is an object in English. 日本語にほんご**が**できます。 (I can speak Japanese.)

## Form: two patterns and the polite forms

| Form | Meaning | Example | |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| noun + **が** + **できます** | “can do or know something” | 日本語にほんごが**できます**。 | I can speak Japanese. |
| dictionary form + **ことが** + **できます** | “can do something” | 日本語にほんごを話はなす**ことができます**。 | I can speak Japanese. |

| Tense | Affirmative | Negative |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Present | できます | できません |
| Past | できました | できませんでした |

- **こと** turns the verb into a noun, so the dictionary form before it is a plain form (Verb Groups). 食たべる**ことが**できます。 (I can eat.)
- With a verb, the object keeps **を** and stands before the verb. 日本語にほんご**を**話はなすことができます。 (I can speak Japanese.)
