# あります and います

> **あります** says that a thing exists or is somewhere, **います** says it of a person or an animal; the place takes **に**. The place takes **に**, the thing or person takes **が**, and the verb comes last: へや**に**ねこ**が**います。

## Overview

- **あります** is for things; **います** is for people and animals. 本ほんが**あります**。 / いぬが**います**。 (There is a book. / There is a dog.)
- The place where something is takes **に**. More on **に** and **で**: see Particles を, に, で, へ. へや**に**つくえがあります。 (There is a desk in the room.)
- Both verbs end the sentence and stay the same for one or many. いぬが**います**。 / いぬがたくさん**います**。 (There is a dog. / There are many dogs.)

## Form: saying where something is

## Position words

- A position word follows the noun and **の**; the phrase takes **に**. See Particles と, も, の.

- A question word replaces the noun and keeps its particle; **か** ends the sentence. See Questions.
- A short answer repeats the verb alone, with **はい** or **いいえ**.

- The owner takes **は** or **には**; what is owned takes **が**.
- A count follows the particle **が**: noun + **が** + number. See Counters.
- The place of an event takes **で**.
