# とき and たら: When and If

> **とき** makes a clause a time “when”; **たら** makes it a condition “if” or a step “once” that the main clause follows. **たら** is the plain past form plus **ら**: 安やすかっ**たら**、買かいます。

## Overview

- **とき** and **たら** join a first clause to a main clause; the main clause ends the sentence and may be polite. ひまな**とき**、えいがを見みます。 / 安やすかっ**たら**、買かいます。 (When I'm free, I watch movies. / If it's cheap, I'll buy it.)
- **とき** is a noun, so a clause before it works like a clause before a noun. See 買った本: Clauses Before Nouns. ひまな**とき**、えいがを見みます。 (When I'm free, I watch movies.)
- **たら** is the plain past form plus **ら**; the plain forms are in The Plain Form. 安やすかっ**たら**、買かいます。 (If it's cheap, I'll buy it.)
