# Comparison: より, ほう, いちばん

> **より** names what a thing is compared with, **のほうが** picks one of two and **いちばん** the top of a group. Put **より** after the thing compared with: この本ほんはあの本ほん**より**高たかいです。

## Overview

- **より** follows the thing compared with: A **は** B **より** … means “A is more … than B”. 東京とうきょうは大阪おおさか**より**大おおきいです。 (Tokyo is bigger than Osaka.)
- To choose one of two, ask with **どちらが** and answer with **のほうが**. 電車でんしゃとバスとどちらが速はやいですか。 — 電車でんしゃの**ほうが**速はやいです。 (Which is faster, the train or the bus? — The train is faster.)
- To name the top of a group, say the group with **の中で** and put **いちばん** before the adjective. 日本にほんの山やまの中なかでふじさんが**いちばん**高たかいです。 (Of Japan's mountains, Mt Fuji is the highest.)
- The adjective keeps its own forms in every comparison: い-Adjectives, な-Adjectives.

## Form: A is more … than B

- **ほう** means “side”: **電車****でんしゃ****のほう** is “the train side”, the one chosen. 電車でんしゃの**ほう**が速はやいです。 (The train is faster.)
- **好き** takes **が**. See Likes and Wants: 好き, ほしい.
